Bonito rewards those who plan and punishes those who improvise: the tours have a counted number of places, the attractions are far apart and the environmental rules are taken seriously. We gathered the mistakes that ruin the most trips there — all of them avoidable — so that you, ecotourist, do not learn them the expensive way. How the town works overall (voucher, prices, season) is in the complete Bonito guide.
1. Booking the guesthouse before the tours
Mistake number one. In Bonito it is the attractions that sell out first, not the hotels. In high season the Rio da Prata and the Gruta do Lago Azul disappear weeks in advance. Right order: lock in the tours for the exact days first, then the accommodation around them.
2. Underestimating the distances
“It is all in Bonito” — except it is not: the Rio da Prata is 50 km away (in Jardim), the Boca da Onça 60 km (in Bodoquena), the Sucuri 18 km. Without a car or a booked transfer, you do not get there. Book at most two tours a day, at attractions in the same direction, and confirm the check-in time (arriving late means losing your place, with no refund).
3. Hunting for a discount from agency to agency
Prices are fixed by the single voucher — R$ 570 at the Rio da Prata is R$ 570 at any counter. What sets a good agency apart is not price, it is logistics: building an itinerary that matches times, distances and weather. Use the time you save to choose the tours well — our comparison of the snorkeling rivers helps.
4. Putting on sunscreen before a float
Beyond being banned, it is sabotage: the chemistry forms a film on the water and poisons the fish and plants of the springs. Your protection is the lycra or neoprene suit they provide. Same logic for repellent. Leave the sun protection for after the tour — your tan survives, and so does the river.
5. Going in the wrong season for your goal
Want record transparency? Dry season, May to September. Want full waterfalls, with Boca da Onça at its best? Summer. Anyone arriving in January dreaming of the crystal-clear Sucuri photo may run into water clouded by the previous day’s rain. If snorkeling is your priority, book it for the first days of the trip — that leaves room to reschedule if it rains.
6. Ignoring insurance and the fitness each tour requires
Boca da Onça has 886 steps on the way back; Anhumas requires an rappel test the day before; floating for 2h30 is more tiring than it sounds. Read the requirements of each attraction before booking — rescheduling because you were not prepared carries no refund — and consider travel insurance that covers adventure activities.
7. Forgetting the money for fees and extras
Professional underwater photos (~R$ 100-200), farm lunches not included in some tours, transfers between attractions: add it all up BEFORE closing the budget, or the card suffers. The full cost of the trip is in the Bonito guide — and to compare with other destinations in the country, see the 10 ecotourism destinations in the Brazilian northeast.
🥾 Who is it for?
Effort: avoiding these mistakes takes no muscle at all — only planning. Children: the number one family mistake is packing the day with attractions; with little ones, one tour per half-day is enough. Older travelers and people with reduced mobility: book the attractions with adapted infrastructure in advance — Bonito has them, but the places are limited.
