Boca da Onça: The Tallest Waterfall in Mato Grosso do Sul and Brazil’s Highest Rappel

Type: Waterfall Destination: Bodoquena

If Bonito is the kingdom of calm water, Boca da Onça is where the Serra da Bodoquena shows its force: the Rio Salobra drops 156 meters — the tallest waterfall in Mato Grosso do Sul — into an amphitheatre of rock walls that also hosts the highest platform rappel in Brazil. This is the complete guide to the experience, from contemplative to full-on. The regional context is in the Bodoquena guide.

The options and what they cost

OptionPrice (2026)Who it suits
Adventure trail (full)~R$ 700 (with a farm lunch)4 km past more than ten waterfalls with swims, ending at the view of the giant drop
Trail + rappel~R$ 800 – R$ 1,100Everything above, plus a 90 m descent from a platform suspended over the valley
Contemplative version (viewpoints + pools)ask when bookingThose who want the spectacle without the full 886 steps
Rappel: minimum age 12 and minimum weight 45 kg; training on a 7 m tower before the real descent.

The trail (and the famous stairway)

The route drops into the Salobra canyon on walkways and forest trail, stopping to swim in emerald pools — every bend reveals another fall. The bill arrives at the end: 886 steps back up to the plateau. It is not a legend; your calves will shake. Wear trail shoes, carry water and keep your group’s pace — it is not a race, and the viewpoints on the way up deserve the pauses.

The rappel: 90 meters of silence

The metal platform juts 15 m beyond the edge of the wall — you descend free of the rock, with the whole valley under your feet and the giant waterfall as a neighbor. Certified guides, double equipment and a full briefing: adrenaline with a grown-up safety protocol. For many ecotourists, this is THE moment of a trip to Mato Grosso do Sul.

Practical notes

  • Book ahead — daily places are limited — and arrive on time: the farm is 26 km from Bodoquena and about 60 km from Bonito, on a dirt road.
  • Plan a full day: early start, back in late afternoon. Lunch cooked on a wood stove is included in most combos.
  • Heavy rain the day before? Call first: the river rises and sections can close.
  • Alternate it with a snorkeling day in Bonito: one day of adrenaline, one of contemplation — the perfect balance of the Serra da Bodoquena.

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: intense — the 886-step stairway back up from the base of Boca da Onça charges (and rewards) every step; there is an rappel version for the adventurous. Children: from age 10 with good fitness. Older travelers and people with reduced mobility: not recommended because of the stairway; the upper viewpoint, near the visitor center, shows the spectacle without the descent.
