São Desidério (BA): the West of Bahia of 100 Caves and Underground Rivers

State: Bahia

While the world looks at Bahia’s beaches, the far west of the state hides one of Brazil’s greatest speleological treasures: São Desidério, 40 km from Barreiras, sits on a karst labyrinth with more than 100 mapped caves, rivers that dive underground and resurface kilometers further on, and pools of turquoise water in the middle of the agricultural cerrado. A destination for the ecotourist who collects places nobody has been to.

What to see

  • Gruta do Catão — the star: giant chambers with skylights and an underground river of bluish water; details in Gruta do Catão.
  • Buraco do Inferno da Lapa do Bode — a dramatic sinkhole with an underground lake famous among technical cave divers.
  • Rio João Rodrigues — bathing spots of crystal-clear water resurging from the limestone, with gentle drift snorkeling.
  • Archaeological sites — rock paintings on cliff faces, distant cousins of those at Serra da Capivara.

The honest assessment

São Desidério is a destination under construction: the attractions are of national standard, the infrastructure is still local — bookings by telephone, modest signage, almost no visitors from outside. For some that is a flaw; for the exploring ecotourist, it is exactly the invitation. Combine it with the western route (Barreiras + the Rio Grande) or slot it into the crossing towards Chapada Diamantina, and you will come home with stories no feed knows.

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: moderate — caves and limestone trails with uneven footing. Children: from ages 8-10 if adventurous. Seniors and reduced mobility: not recommended inside the caves; the São Francisco lookouts and the region’s bathing spots are the gentle alternatives.
