Between the Vale do Paraíba and the sea at Paraty/Angra, one of the largest continuous blocks of Atlantic Forest in the country rises from almost sea level to 2,088 meters: Parque Nacional da Serra da Bocaina, a discreet giant squeezed between famous destinations — and precisely for that reason, a refuge of historic trails and crowd-free waterfalls.
Getting there
The mountain gateway is São José do Barreiro-SP (around 250 km from São Paulo and from Rio, via the Dutra highway), from where a steep dirt road climbs to the park’s historic core. The coastal side touches Paraty and Trindade — where the park embraces the sea on the Caminho do Ouro and at the wild beaches of Sono and Ponta Negra (outside the boundary, but within the same embrace of forest).
What to do
- Trilha do Ouro — the jewel: 3-4 days descending the historic stone paving to Mambucaba, with three monumental waterfalls along the way (full article: Trilha do Ouro).
- Cachoeira Santo Isidro — the signature fall of the upper range, with an icy pool and stone tables for a whole day out.
- Cachoeira das Posses — veils chained together in the setting of a historic farm.
- High-altitude grasslands — lookouts above the clouds around Pico do Tira Chapéu, for anyone who loves a horizon.
History in the stones
Gold, coffee and mule drivers came down this mountain paving — the stones you tread on the Trilha do Ouro were laid by enslaved hands more than two centuries ago, and the historic farms round about (some now guesthouses) carry that memory. Ecotourism here is also a lesson in Brazil.
When to go
May to September: a dry range, cold nights and clear views. Summer brings daily rain — long trails become risky, but the waterfalls up top make up for it in volume. Entry is free at several access points; through-hikes require registration and an accredited guide.
🥾 Who is it for?
Effort: moderate at the upper waterfalls (dirt road + short trails); intense on the through-hike. Children: Santo Isidro and Posses from ages 6-7; the through-hike 14+. Seniors and reduced mobility: the upper range is visited by car with short walks — a contemplative day guaranteed; the Trilha do Ouro asks for full preparation. A park for anyone who likes nature with silence and history.
