Trilha do Ouro in the Bocaina: 3 Days Down from the Range to the Sea on Colonial Paving

Type: Trail Destination: Serra da Bocaina

Few Brazilian trails carry so much history per meter: the Trilha do Ouro of the Serra da Bocaina drops around 40 km from the range to the sea over the colonial paving along which the gold of Minas once flowed — today a 3-4 day through-hike between monumental waterfalls, farmhouse lodgings and a grand finale with your feet in the water at Mambucaba, next door to Paraty.

The classic itinerary (4 days)

Day 1: arrival at São José do Barreiro and the climb into the range, overnight in a rural guesthouse. Day 2: walking with stops at Cachoeira Santo Isidro and Cachoeira das Posses — giant veils of icy water — sleeping in an adapted local family home. Day 3: the day of Cachoeira dos Veados, among the most beautiful and isolated in the Southeast, with the forest warming up as you descend. Day 4: the final kilometers of paving down to Mambucaba, where the reward is a swim in the sea (and, for many groups, rafting or Paraty as a bonus).

Logistics

  • Prior ICMBio authorization is compulsory for the through-hike (requested by email to the park, with places controlled per weekend). A guide is recommended — the route is well waymarked and experienced trekkers do it independently with the authorization. Full packages (transport, lodging, meals, guide) run in the region of R$ 2,500-3,500.
  • Travel light: the overnights are in lodgings with a bed and home cooking; support mules carry luggage on some stretches.
  • The mountain→sea direction is the standard one (it descends more than it climbs — as the knees will tell you).
  • Season: May to September; in the rains the rivers along the way rise and the paving turns slippery.

Why it stays with you

It is the rare combination: grand nature (three waterfalls tens of meters high, all to your group), palpable history under your boots and the complete arc of physical Brazil — high-altitude grassland, hillside Atlantic Forest and the sea — in three days of walking. Those who have done it recommend it with a gleam in the eye; those about to do it, come back here and tell us.

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: intense — days of 12-15 km with long descents (poles save knees); rustic but comfortable nights. Children: from ages 12-14 with trail experience — the format with lodgings and mules makes it friendlier than tent-based through-hikes. Seniors and reduced mobility: active walkers aged 60+ complete it regularly (the mule support helps); not suitable for mobility limitations — to taste the Bocaina without the through-hike, a day at Santo Isidro delivers the essence.
