Barra Grande (PI): the Capital of Wind — Kitesurfing, Sand Streets and Sunset on the Pier

State: Piauí

Piauí has only 66 km of coastline — and has made the most of every meter: Barra Grande, a fishing village with sand streets in the municipality of Cajueiro da Praia, has become one of the world capitals of kitesurfing and the charming stop on the Rota das Emoções. Steady wind, shallow warm sea, boutique guesthouses and zero nightclub bustle: a paradise of winds with the soul of a village. Complete guide.

The wind owns this place

From July to January, the wind comes in steady and predictable (18-30 knots) over a shallow tidal lagoon with no rocks — school conditions for beginners and a playground for advanced riders. Kite lessons: around R$ 150-250 an hour, or complete 8-10h courses for R$ 1,200-2,000 at the village schools; equipment hire for the independent. Out of the water, the ritual is unique: late afternoon on the pier watching the sun go down over the bay with the kites still dancing on the horizon.

Beyond the kite

  • Seahorses and manatees — Cajueiro da Praia is a sanctuary for both; the canoe trip through the mangrove is unmissable: the rare wildlife of Cajueiro.
  • Cajueiro Rei — the largest cashew tree in the world by continuous area (8,800 m²!), 8 km away, free to visit.
  • Beach and dune trips — quad bike/buggy to Macapá, Maramar and the deserted coconut groves of the Piauí coast.
  • Village cooking — prawns, lobster and the catch of the day in the sand-floored restaurants (R$ 50-120).

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: easy on the beach; moderate to intense in kitesurfing (lessons demand vigour). Children: a gentle beach for all ages; kite from the age of 12 at the schools. Older travelers and reduced mobility: the village is flat and quiet — an excellent base; the kite is for the willing, the sunset belongs to everyone.
