Hidden in the walls of the Peruaçu river valley in northern Minas, Lapa dos Desenhos holds some of the most impressive rock-art panels of Cavernas do Peruaçu National Park. The official trail is 2.6 km, easy level, and every visit is made with an ICMBio-credentialed guide — a rule that protects both you and a heritage thousands of years old.
Why visit
Few places in Brazil bring nature and archaeology together with such force. In the light-rock shelters, geometric figures and ancestral drawings cover the walls, in ensembles that named the lapa and helped make the valley a reference for rock art in the Peruaçu. The path also yields views of the dry canyon and of vegetation shifting from cerrado to caatinga, and pairs well with the neighboring Lapa do Boquete on the same visiting day.
Access and logistics
- Park base — the Fabião I community, on the BR-135 (km 155), about 45 km from Januária (MG); the visitor center sits on the Janelão axis.
- Booking — visits are confirmed through the park’s official e-mail (cavernas.peruacu@icmbio.gov.br) and the credentialed guide is hired separately, in advance; the general ratio is 1 guide for up to 8 visitors.
- Hours — Tuesday to Sunday, 8am to 6pm, with attraction entry until 2pm.
- Trail — 2.6 km, easy level, about 2h20 including the walk and time at the panels; closed shoes are mandatory.
What to expect from the visit
The guide leads the group along the marked trails to the shelters — leaving them is not allowed. In front of the panels, the rule is simple: eyes and camera yes, hands no. No touching the rock, no wetting the surface, no collecting anything; that is what keeps alive drawings that have crossed millennia. The reward is standing face to face with one of the country’s richest sets of paintings, with time to hear how the local guides read each scene.
When to go and precautions
The dry season, May to October, keeps the trails firm — the landscape turns gray, but the panels lose nothing. In the rains (November to April) the valley greens and the heat bites: the region easily passes 40°C. The park requires long pants, long sleeves and repellent, as this is a leishmaniasis-endemic area, plus sunscreen and water. Pair it with Gruta do Janelão if you have more than one day.
🥾 Who is it for?
For anyone moved by human stories as old as the landscape: the easy trail allows children used to walking, and the group’s pace is set by the guide. It is not an outing for exploring on your own — here, the guided visit is the experience itself.
