With more than 300 caves in the PETAR, the question is not “whether” but “which ones”. This is the adventure ladder of the caves open to visitors — from the contemplative walk to the through-trip that demands everything you have.
Easy: the cathedrals
- Caverna Santana — the queen of the park: 500 visitable meters of chambers ornamented with stalactites, curtains and travertine dams. About an hour and a half inside, on a floor that is mostly walkway (light effort).
- Morro Preto — a monumental portal lit by the morning sun, linked to the Couto cave by a short trail. The perfect pairing for a first day (light).
Medium: getting your boots wet
- Água Suja — an underground river, a waterfall inside the cave and three hours of adventure with water up to your shins (moderate, unmissable).
- Alambari de Baixo — a through-trip where the water can reach your chest when the river is high; the feeling of real exploration (moderate).
Hard: for caving adventurers
- Temimina — 9 km of walking to reach the cave in the Núcleo Caboclos and six hours of progression, for an underground world that is practically yours alone (intense).
- Ouro Grosso — a vertical through-trip with waterfalls inside, demanding technique and stamina (intense).
The monumental bonus
The Casa de Pedra is not visited from the inside — but the trail to the viewpoint over its 215-meter portal (one of the largest on the planet) is a compulsory pilgrimage for anyone who wants to feel the scale of what water has carved in the Vale do Ribeira.
Golden tips
- Book the caves in advance — the daily caps fill up on public holidays.
- Helmet and flashlight are supplied by the monitors; bring sneakers that can get wet and a change of clothes.
- Build themed days: one dry cave + one river cave + a swim in the Betari to finish.
- Never touch the speleothems: the oil on your skin halts formations thousands of years in the making.
🥾 Who is it for?
Effort: pick your level — light (Santana, Morro Preto), moderate (Água Suja, Alambari) or intense (Temimina, Ouro Grosso). Children: 6-7+ in the easy ones, 10+ in the medium ones, 14+ in the hard ones. Older travelers and people with reduced mobility: Santana, with its walkways, is the viable way in; the rest involve uneven ground, water and crouching — talk to your guide before booking.
