A river that is born, runs and empties in 147 meters. It sounds like a geographical joke, but it is one of the most striking natural spectacles in Tocantins: Rio Azuis, in Aurora do Tocantins, in the Serras Gerais, is officially the smallest river in Brazil (and one of the smallest in the world) — and it makes up for its size with a transparency that defies photography.
An aquarium born from the rock
The Azuis springs from a karst source at the foot of the ridge — water filtered through limestone for years until it emerges crystal-blue, at exactly 24-26 °C all year round. Along its tiny course to the Sobrado river it forms natural pools where schools of piau and piaba fish swim, indifferent to visitors. With a mask and snorkel, it feels like floating inside an aquarium.
How to visit
The river sits on private land organized for visits, about 30 km from Aurora do Tocantins and 500 km from Palmas — most travelers include it in 4-5 day Serras Gerais itineraries with agencies that operate the region. Entry costs around R$ 20-40, with simple changing rooms and a farm restaurant. The number of simultaneous visitors is controlled to protect the spring.
Aquarium rules
- No sunscreen or repellent before entering the water — the spring is a closed, sensitive ecosystem.
- Do not touch the fish or feed the schools.
- Avoid stepping on the bottom: the sediment cloud takes hours to settle.
- Respect the time limit on busy days — everyone deserves their turn in the aquarium.
Pair it with
The Azuis pairs perfectly with Lagoa da Serra, Lagoa do Japonês and the Cânion Encantado — together they form the Serras Gerais water circuit. From May to October (dry season) the transparency peaks and the dirt roads stay firm.
🥾 Who is it for?
Effort: easy — car access close to the spring and a short, flat walk. Children: perfect for all ages; the shallow pools by the bank are the kids’ spot, always with a life vest and adult supervision. Seniors and reduced mobility: one of the most accessible attractions in the Serras Gerais — gentle floating in warm, shallow, current-free water; only the natural floor at the entrance calls for care. If your family runs at different speeds, this is the outing that pleases everyone.
