Pirenópolis (GO): Complete 2026 Guide — Waterfalls, History and What It Costs

State: Goiás

Pirenópolis is the rare destination that delivers two worlds in the same weekend: a colonial historic center of cobbled streets, eighteenth-century churches and award-winning food — and, all around it, dozens of waterfalls in the cerrado of the Serra dos Pireneus. At 150 km from Brasília and 120 from Goiânia, “Piri” is the easiest nature escape on the Central Plateau. This guide organizes it all: waterfalls, history, 2026 prices and when to go.

The two sides of Piri

By day, waterfalls: the attractions sit on private reserves within a 15 km radius, with entry fees from R$ 35 to R$ 80 — from the Santuário Vagafogo (a forest trail with its famous brunch) to the falls of the Cachoeira do Abade. The full menu is in the best waterfalls in Pirenópolis. By night, history: the Rua do Lazer buzzes with restaurants, the Igreja Matriz (1728) presides over the old houses, and silverwork — a local tradition — fills the shop windows.

When to go

Dry season from May to September for firm trails and clear pools. If you can, aim for the Cavalhadas (the Festa do Divino, around 50 days after Easter): three days of “battles” between Moors and Christians on horseback, a cultural heritage unique in Brazil — but book your guesthouse months ahead. Weekends fill up all year; from Tuesday to Thursday, Piri is yours.

Ecotourist tips

  • The private reserves cap visitors per day: on public holidays, arrive at opening time or buy online where available.
  • The usual rule applies: sunscreen only after the swim — the pools of Piri feed the headwaters of the Corumbá.
  • Try the local produce: cheeses, cachaças and the mountain pamonha sustain the surrounding smallholders.
  • Fitting Piri into a longer trip? See the duel Pirenópolis vs Chapada dos Veadeiros and the weekend itinerary.

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: light in the historic center, moderate at the waterfalls. Children: a complete destination — waterfalls with shallow pools and ice-cream shops in the center; from ages 4-5 on the short trails. Older travelers and people with reduced mobility: the historic center of Portuguese cobblestones asks for care, but it is flat; several waterfalls have quick access from the parking lot.
