Ibitipoca: Complete Guide to the Park of Caves and the Janela do Céu

State: Minas Gerais

There is a corner of Minas where the mountains are made of golden quartzite, the water runs tea-colored over the rock slabs and a window in the stone frames the valley like a painting. Parque Estadual do Ibitipoca and its base village, Conceição do Ibitipoca, make up one of the best-loved mountain destinations in the Southeast — charming in just the right measure, wild in just the right places.

Getting there

The gateway is the village of Conceição do Ibitipoca, about 90 km from Juiz de Fora (the nearest large city), around 330 km from Rio and 320 km from Belo Horizonte. The final stretch is a well-maintained dirt road. The village makes any journey worth it: cobbled streets, welcoming guesthouses, proper Minas cooking and live music at weekends.

The three circuits

  • Circuito das Águas — the gentlest: caves, stone bridges and amber-water pools for swimming (half a day, great for families).
  • Circuito Janela do Céu — the classic: 16 km taking in caves, Pico da Lombada and the waterfall that plunges through the most photographed stone window in Minas. A full day (details in the article on the Janela do Céu circuit).
  • Circuito do Pião — the wild one: the hilltop cross, rock walls and the 360° view from Pico do Pião (long, for well-trained legs).

Booking is compulsory

The park caps daily visitors (a few hundred, recently increased) — book online in advance, especially for weekends and public holidays, and arrive early: the gate opens at 7am and the first in the line get the trails (and the pools) almost to themselves. An up-to-date yellow fever vaccination is a regional requirement.

When to go

April to October: settled weather and dry trails — the freezing nights are part of the charm (bring a proper coat). In summer the rains fatten the waterfalls, but the mist can “close the window” — and a wet rock slab demands respect.

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: easy on the Circuito das Águas; moderate to intense on the Janela do Céu and the Pião (distance + high-altitude sun). Children: Circuito das Águas from ages 4-5; Janela do Céu from age 10 with trail experience. Seniors and reduced mobility: the Circuito das Águas, with its walkways and nearby pools, is the right choice; the village itself — with its slow pace and good food — is worth the trip for any level of mobility.
