If the trails of Parque Estadual da Pedra da Boca are already worth the trip, it is on the rock faces that the destination shows its other calling: one of the best vertical-sports spots in the Northeast. Solid rock, varied routes and experienced operators make Araruna-PB a small temple of adrenaline in the caatinga.
The pendulum: the adrenaline star
The most sought-after activity is the pendulum: attached to ropes anchored at the top of the rock face, you jump into the void and swing in a great arc over the valley. For the brave there is the inverted version, where the jump is made backwards. The butterflies are guaranteed, but the sensation of flying over the caatinga makes up for every second of hesitation.
Rappelling the rock faces
The rappel descents happen on vertical faces tens of meters high, always with double safety equipment and guides in attendance. It is a great way in for anyone who has never tried it: the technique is simple to learn and the descent lets you appreciate up close the textures of rock sculpted by the wind.
Climbing
The rock faces of Araruna bring together climbing routes of different grades, frequented by climbers from Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte. Beginners can try the sport on easier routes with a top rope; experienced climbers find technical challenges with a view over the sea of hills of the agreste. The firm rock and excellent grip are praised by those who come from elsewhere.
How to book and how much it costs
The activities are run by accredited guides and agencies, with advance booking — especially on public holidays. Prices vary according to the activity and the size of the group, so it is worth asking for a quote ahead of time. Always check whether the operator provides a helmet, harness and certified equipment, and whether they carry accident insurance.
Tips for adventure day
- Go for early morning or late afternoon: the caatinga sun punishes the rock faces in the middle of the day.
- Wear light, flexible clothing and closed shoes, and tie back hair and accessories.
- Hydrate before and after — the dry climate is deceptive.
- Suffer from vertigo? Start with the rappel, which gives more of a sense of control than the pendulum.
- Ask them to film your jump: most operators offer a video record.
Between August and October, the dry weather and mild temperatures create perfect conditions for a whole weekend of vertical adventure in the heart of the agreste.
🥾 Who is it for?
Effort: intense at key moments (rappelling, pendulum) and moderate on the access trails. Children: pendulum and rappelling generally from ages 12-14 with authorization; check with the operator. Seniors and reduced mobility: the vertical activities require full mobility; for those coming along with the group, the base makes for good photos and the best reservoir in the region.
