Between São Luiz do Paraitinga and the sea at Ubatuba, the Rio Paraibuna tumbles down the Serra do Mar in continuous rapids — and since 1996 the rafting boats have made the most of the gift: a classic descent inside the Núcleo Santa Virgínia of the state park, with Atlantic Forest pressed against the banks and spring water splashing in your face.
How it works
The local operators (based on the SP-125 towards Ubatuba) run guided descents of about 2 hours on class II-III rapids — thrills guaranteed with safety to spare: helmet, buoyancy aid, briefing and experienced guides in every boat. The typical package (R$ 150-250) includes equipment and support; in the summer floods the river wakes up angrier and the descents gain extra spice.
Beyond the boat
The Núcleo Santa Virgínia holds cloud-forest trails — such as the one to Poço do Pito and through-hikes towards Picinguaba — in one of the best-preserved stretches of the São Paulo Serra do Mar. Put it together: rafting in the morning, a trail in the afternoon and an afogado dinner in the historic town. A perfect day has no other definition.
Tips
- Clothes that can get wet + a full change in the car; the mountain water is cold.
- Old sneakers or strapped sandals — flip-flops stay in the river.
- Book the day before on public holidays; small groups leave at fixed times.
- Heavy rain at the headwaters cancels the trip for safety — keep the itinerary flexible.
- Glasses on a cord, or leave them in the dry: the waves take everything.
🥾 Who is it for?
Effort: moderate — paddling in bursts and adrenaline in the rapids; swimming is not compulsory (the buoyancy aid does the work), but being comfortable in water helps. Children: generally from ages 12-14 depending on the river level and the operator. Seniors and reduced mobility: rafting requires the mobility to get in and out of the boat and to react to commands — active over-60s take part with the operator’s approval; for the rest of the group, the gentle trails of the núcleo and the calm pools of the lower Paraibuna deliver the range without the shaking.
