If Brazilian mountaineering has a rite of passage, this is it: the Travessia Petrópolis-Teresópolis, around 30 km in 3 days crossing the high ground of the Serra dos Órgãos, between high-altitude grasslands, granite walls and seas of cloud that open up at your feet.
The classic route
Day 1: from the Petrópolis site, a hard climb to the Castelos do Açu (~1,900 m), with its labyrinth of rock and the most photographed sunset in the range — a night camping beside the shelter. Day 2: the technical day: ridges, slabs and passages with fixed rope (the famous “Ferradura”) to the area around Abrigo 4. Day 3: the push to the Pedra do Sino (~2,275 m), the roof of the park, and a long descent on battered knees and a full heart down to Teresópolis.
Rules and logistics
- Registration compulsory at the entrance (plus an overnight/camping fee per night).
- Classic direction: Petrópolis → Teresópolis (the hardest climb falls on the first day, with a full pack).
- Water: marked springs along the way, but carry capacity for 3 liters.
- Overnights at designated wild campsites — a four-season tent and a −5 °C bag in winter.
- A guide is recommended for anyone who does not navigate well: mist wipes out the path in minutes.
- Individual booking is compulsory on the park’s official site, at least two working days in advance — overnight places are limited (30 at the Pedra do Sino, 30 at the Açu; shelters unavailable, take a tent). Checked in August 2026.
When to do it
From May to September: dry cold, open skies and a firm trail. Avoid the summer — electrical storms on the ridge are a real risk, and the park closes the trek during alerts. In any season, start the days before 7am.
Preparation
Train as you would for Monte Roraima: long walks with a 12-15 kg pack, leg strengthening and a night-trail test. The trek has no easy rescue — self-sufficiency is the watchword.
🥾 Who is it for?
Effort: intense — 30 km with a full load, heavy accumulated gain and technical sections with rope. Children: not recommended before the age of 15-16 with solid experience. Older travelers and reduced mobility: only for active, trained mountaineers of 60+; it is not suitable for mobility limitations. Want a taste of the range without the 30 km? The Pedra do Sino as a day trip from Teresópolis delivers the summit for half the commitment.
