If one outing sums up Itacaré, it is this: a full day walking Atlantic Forest trails to string together four practically wild beaches — Engenhoca, Havaizinho, Camboinha and Itacarezinho. It is the perfect route for understanding why this destination became an ecotourism reference in southern Bahia.
How it works
The four beaches sit in sequence along the Itacaré–Ilhéus road, about 15 minutes from the village. The guided outing includes transport to the trailhead and a local guide, then proceeds on foot through the forest, dropping down to each beach for a swim and a rest. The pace is relaxed: with stops, the day runs 4 to 6 hours.
Praia por praia
The four beaches, one by one- Engenhoca — a trail of about 20 minutes beneath huge trees. Good waves for beginner surfers and a freshwater creek spilling onto the sand.
- Havaizinho — small, ringed by coconut palms and rocks that form shallow snorkeling spots at low tide.
- Camboinha — the most hidden of the four, almost always deserted, right beside Havaizinho.
- Itacarezinho — the grand finale: 3.5 km of sand with an endless coconut grove, open sea and a charming restaurant to close the day.
With a guide or without?
The trails are simple, but we recommend the guided outing: beyond the stories about the forest, the cacao and the wildlife, the guide knows each beach’s sea conditions and the quietest hours. For safety, avoid walking the forest stretches alone or with valuables on display — in a group, the walk is easygoing and very family-friendly.
What to bring
- Sneakers or grippy sandals — flip-flops struggle on the climbs.
- Water (at least 1.5 liters), fruit or light snacks.
- Sunscreen, a hat and a UV shirt.
- A dry bag or waterproof backpack for electronics.
- Cash for the Itacarezinho restaurant or the stalls along the way.
Bonus: a waterfall on the way
Many departures pair the four beaches with a dip at Tijuípe Waterfall, on the same road — the Atlantic Forest’s dark, chilly water to rinse off the salt before heading back to the village. If you can choose, book the full package: it is Itacaré’s best value.
🥾 Who is it for?
Effort: moderate — 4 to 6 hours combining forest trails and beach stops. Children: from age 8 with hiking experience. Seniors and reduced mobility: the full trail is not recommended; the alternative is driving to Itacarezinho and enjoying the same sea without the trek.
