4-Day Jalapão Itinerary: The Perfect Expedition, Day by Day

Fervedouros, dunes, Cachoeira da Velha, Pedra Furada and golden grass organized into a 4-day 4x4 expedition through Jalapão — with logistics tips.

Destination: Jalapão

Jalapão is vast, the distances are long and the roads are sand — which is why a good itinerary makes all the difference. This 4-day plan is the most balanced expedition format: it covers the classics without turning the trip into a driving marathon.

Day 1 — Palmas → Cachoeira da Formiga → Mateiros

Early departure from Palmas towards the heart of Jalapão. The first reward comes mid-afternoon: Cachoeira da Formiga, with its surreal blue-green pool — a mandatory dip to wash off the road dust. Arrival in Mateiros, the region’s base, for the first night.

Day 2 — Fervedouros + dunes at sunset

The morning is for the fervedouros — two or three, typically Bela Vista and Buritis, with the water at peak clarity and few people around. In the afternoon, on to the Jalapão Dunes: the barefoot climb up the warm sand ends with the sunset spectacle, the Serra do Espírito Santo changing color in the background. It is the most iconic day of the expedition.

Day 3 — Cachoeira da Velha + the Rio Novo beach

The imposing Cachoeira da Velha opens the day: a horseshoe of thundering water on the Rio Novo, with breathtaking viewpoints. Next, a swim at the light-sand river beach upstream and, on the way back, a stop at Pedra Furada for the classic photos through its windows of colored rock. Free late afternoon in Mateiros — try the local cooking.

Day 4 — Mumbuca and golden grass → Palmas

Before heading back, a visit to the quilombola community of Mumbuca to see the capim dourado golden-grass crafts — and to understand why it can only be harvested in September, under traditional management. Conscious shopping done, it is the road back to Palmas with your memory card (and heart) full.

Essential logistics

  • Agency or your own 4×4? For most people, agency: 4-day packages leave Palmas with everything included. Independent off-roading demands experience and a properly equipped vehicle.
  • Where to sleep: Mateiros and São Félix concentrate the guesthouses — simple, clean and welcoming.
  • Season: May to September (dry). July is the peak; June and August balance weather and crowds.
  • Packing: light clothes, a jacket for the night, sneakers, flip-flops, a water bottle, a flashlight and bags to protect electronics from dust.

With more days, add Fervedouro do Ceiça, the Sussuapara Canyon and Serra da Catedral — Jalapão always keeps a reason for you to come back.

When to do this itinerary

Best period: May to September — the dry season, standard for 4×4 tours. Also works in: October to April for those who accept rain showers (compacted sand actually helps traction). Watch out in: heavy rains spoil the waterfalls and the Serra do Espírito Santo climb; in the dry season, soft sand bogs down inexperienced drivers. Why: Jalapão is a sand desert cut by springs — the challenge changes face with the season, but never disappears. (Seasonality verified in August 2026.)

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: moderate — 4 expedition days with light activities and long transfers. Children: the itinerary works from age 6; day 2 (fervedouros + dunes) is their favorite. Seniors and reduced mobility: the itinerary is adaptable — skip the dune climb and take it in from the base; talk to the agency about a more comfortable vehicle.
