2-Day Serra da Capivara Itinerary: Canyons, Museums and a Backlands Sunset

Destination: Serra da Capivara

Two full days are enough for the essentials of the Serra da Capivara — and it is striking how much fits into them when the order is right. This itinerary optimizes light, distances and energy (the caatinga is draining in the middle of the day). Context and costs in the complete guide.

Day 1 — The park classics

  • 7.30am — Set off with your guide; the morning at the Desfiladeiro da Capivara: a walk between rock walls with panels of paintings at every bend, in the cool of the morning.
  • 12pm — Lunch and a siesta in São Raimundo (the midday sun in the backlands is not up for debate).
  • 3pm — Museu do Homem Americano (~R$ 30): the scientific context that multiplies the value of everything you saw in the morning.
  • 4.30pm — Boqueirão da Pedra Furada: the one that moves you.

Day 2 — Red rock and a museum that surprises

  • 7.30am — The Serra Vermelha / Baixão das Andorinhas circuit: red rock viewpoints and less-visited sites — the Capivara with nobody around.
  • 2.30pm — Museu da Natureza (~R$ 40): immersive, modern, telling 4 billion years with staging that would make a capital city jealous — many ecotourists rate it the best nature museum in the country.
  • 5pm — The pottery workshops of the Serra: local ceramicists reproduce the rock art on award-winning pieces — the right souvenir, with the income going straight to the community.

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: light to moderate — circuit days with car transfers and short walks. Children: the itinerary works from age 6, with the museum as the wildcard during the hot hours. Older travelers and people with reduced mobility: the itinerary is naturally accessible; the Museu da Natureza and the Museu do Homem Americano are air-conditioned and adapted.
