Waterfalls and Blue Pools of the Chapada Diamantina: the Ranking of the Waters

The waters of the Chapada Diamantina fall into two families: the canyon waterfalls, which move you by their scale, and the cave pools, which hypnotise you with blue. No single trip covers them all — this ranking helps you choose wisely. The full logistics are in the Chapada guide.

1. Cachoeira do Buracão — maximum thrill

You swim along a canyon corridor in a life jacket, turn the last bend, and the 85 m fall explodes in front of you, thundering into the closed pool. It is not the tallest — it is the most intense. Base in Ibicoara or Mucugê (~R$ 25 plus a compulsory local guide). Worth the full day of traveling.

2. Poço Azul — floating in a shaft of light

From September to April, between about 10.30am and 2pm, the sun comes through the cleft in the cave and switches on an electric blue in the transparent water — and you float INSIDE the beam (~R$ 80, with life jacket and snorkel). Outside the window of light it is still beautiful; inside it, it is another dimension. Combine it on the same day with the Gruta Azul and the Pratinha.

3. Cachoeira da Fumaça — the smoking abyss

380 m of free fall — the wind unmakes the water into mist before it reaches the ground. The classic trail (12 km there and back from the Capão, free, guide recommended) leads to the LIP of the abyss: lying on the ledge and peering into the void is the most famous stomach-drop in Bahia. Best with water: December to April; at the height of the dry season it almost disappears.

4. Poço Encantado — the contemplative blue

Here you do not swim: you descend into the cave to LOOK at a pool 60 m deep and perfectly transparent, with the famous blue beam in the same September-to-April window (~R$ 60). It is the perfect pair to the Poço Azul — one to live, the other to revere.

5. Sossego, Mosquito and Ribeirão do Meio — the ones for swimming

Sossego (Lençóis): 3 hours of rock-hopping to an amphitheatre pool — a perfect half day. Mosquito: a 60 m fall with a generous pool and golden late-afternoon light. Ribeirão do Meio: the natural rock slide 40 minutes from the center of Lençóis — the spontaneous arrival-day option.

How to spread them across the trip

If you have…Choose
2 daysPoço Azul plus the caves (day 1); Pai Inácio plus Ribeirão do Meio (day 2)
4 daysAdd the Fumaça from the top and the Sossego
6+ daysAdd the Buracão (base in Mucugê) — or swap the lot for the Pati
The full day-by-day is in the 5-day itinerary.

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: moderate — trails of 30 minutes to 3 hours to reach the pools and waterfalls. Children: from age 6 at the easy-access pools (Pratinha, Mucugezinho); the bigger falls from age 10. Older travelers and people with reduced mobility: the Pratinha and the pools with built infrastructure are workable; the Poço do Diabo has a steep descent — always ask about the “shortest access”.
