It is the classic Brazilian ecotourist’s dilemma: the sand village in Ceará or the sanctuary archipelago off Pernambuco? Both are spectacular nature destinations, but they deliver very different experiences (and very different bills). In this direct comparison we put Jericoacoara and Fernando de Noronha side by side — 2026 costs, wildlife, the right season and travel profile — so you can decide without guesswork.

Nature and wildlife: a technical draw, in different styles
Noronha is unbeatable underwater: spinner dolphins, nesting turtles, harmless sharks a few meters from the sand and the most famous diving in Brazil (a first dive from around R$ 600). Projeto Tamar keeps an active base on the island, and every dive is a live marine biology lesson.
Jeri wins on variety of landscape per real spent: shifting dunes, freshwater lagoons, a mangrove with seahorses at Guriú and the collective sunset on the dune. It is barefoot ecotourism, with no fixed schedule — see the 4-day Jeri itinerary to picture the experience.
Best season
Jericoacoara works all year: full lagoons from January to June, kitesurfing winds from July to December. Noronha has calm water on its sheltered side (with visibility up to 50 m) from August to December — the best window for diving — and surf from December to March.
The ecotourist verdict
- Choose Jericoacoara if you want nature plus a charming village plus a budget under control, or if this is your first big ecotourism trip. Start with the complete guide.
- Choose Noronha if marine life is your absolute priority and the budget allows — it is expensive because the number of visitors is capped, and that is exactly why the place is still untouched.
- You cannot go wrong: both are on our list of 10 ecotourism destinations in the Brazilian northeast — the order is only a question of time and money.
🥾 Who is it for?
Effort: light at both destinations — the difference is in the wallet and the scenery, not the fitness. Children: both work well; Jeri has unbeatable shallow lagoons for little ones, Noronha needs care with rough seas on some beaches. Older travelers and people with reduced mobility: both are workable with planning; in Noronha, favor easy-access beaches such as Porto; in Jeri, rely on the buggy.
