Pirenópolis has a waterfall for every kind of ecotourist: the ones you reach in flip-flops, the ones that make you sweat on the trail, and the ones where you spend the whole day. Since almost all of them sit on private reserves with a paid entry, choosing well makes a difference to both the wallet and the itinerary. A straight ranking, with 2026 prices and effort levels — the general logistics are in the complete Pirenópolis guide.
1. Cachoeira do Abade — the queen
A 22 m fall with a generous pool and a circuit of smaller cascades (R$ 70 on weekdays, R$ 80 at weekends; 15 km from the center). A short 500 m trail or the full 2.5 km circuit. Good facilities and a look worthy of the fame — if you only go to one, this is it.
2. Reserva Vargem Grande — three in one
Santa Maria (the most photogenic in Piri, with its emerald pool), Lázaro and Véu da Noiva in the same reserve (R$ 60; 12 km from the center). Fill a whole day alternating swims — take a picnic.
3. Santuário Vagafogo — gourmet nature
A 1.5 km raised walkway through gallery forest with small pools (R$ 35) and the legendary jam brunch (R$ 135, book ahead). A perfect half-day, ideal for the day you arrive or the day you leave.
4. Cachoeiras do Bonsucesso — six falls
A sequence of six cascades with pools (R$ 60; 5 km from the center, a moderate 1.2 km trail). Less famous than the Abade and frequently emptier — the smart choice on a public holiday.
5. Meia Lua — a natural jacuzzi
Rapids that form jacuzzi tubs in the rock (R$ 50; 7 km, easy access with steps). Small children? This is the one.
6. Usina Velha — history with a swim
At 3.5 km from the center (R$ 50, a 200 m trail), it mixes the ruins of a 1950 hydroelectric plant with pools of the Rio das Almas. The most “urban” of the waterfalls — perfect for stretching out an afternoon without logistics.
How to arrange the day
| Profile | Ideal combination |
|---|---|
| Only one day | Abade (morning) + Usina Velha (afternoon) |
| With children | Meia Lua + Vagafogo with brunch |
| A full day of nature | The whole of Vargem Grande |
| Escaping the crowds | Bonsucesso + Meia Lua (Tuesday to Thursday) |
Fit it all into a weekend with our 2-day itinerary in Piri.
🥾 Who is it for?
Effort: moderate — trails of 15 to 40 minutes at most of the complexes. Children: from ages 5-6; the complexes with several pools let you choose the size of the adventure. Older travelers and people with reduced mobility: prioritise the waterfalls with a short approach (ask at the entrance — the complexes will point you to the nearest fall).
