Terra Ronca (GO): Complete 2026 Guide to the Largest Cave Complex in Brazil

State: Goiás

There is an underground Brazil few people know: in north-eastern Goiás, the Parque Estadual de Terra Ronca holds one of the largest cave complexes in South America — stone portals 90 meters high, rivers that vanish into the mountain and chambers that would swallow cathedrals. This is exploration-grade ecotourism, almost without the crowds. This guide shows how to visit, what it costs and how to prepare.

Where it is and how to get there

The park lies between São Domingos and Guarani de Goiás, some 300 km from Brasília (the base is the village of São João Evangelista, on the edge of the park). A car is essential — the last kilometers are unpaved — and the trip pairs well with the Chapada dos Veadeiros, about three hours away: canyons above, caves below, the full package of deep Goiás.

How a visit works

An accredited guide is compulsory in every cave — and that is not bureaucracy: down there is no lighting, no signage and no mobile signal; the guide is your light, your map and your insurance. Tours cost from R$ 180 to R$ 300 per person depending on the cave (helmet and flashlight usually included), booked through the guesthouses or with the local guides’ association. There is no park ticket office: the price is the guiding service — income straight into the community.

The main caves

Terra Ronca I has one of the largest cave portals in Brazil and even hosts religious pilgrimages; Angélica is the friendliest, with ornamented chambers and a river of clear water; São Mateus and São Bernardo challenge the experienced with underground river crossings and drops. The full ranking, with the difficulty and duration of each one, is in the caves of Terra Ronca: which to see first.

Golden rules underground

  • Do not touch the speleothems: the oil on your skin kills formations that took millennia to grow.
  • Nothing comes in, nothing goes out: no litter, and no stone “souvenirs”.
  • Bats own the house — low light and silence near the colonies.
  • Prepare your body and your bag properly: our caving checklist lists everything, from footwear to the second flashlight.

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: moderate — reaching the cave mouths involves trails and stream crossings. Children: from age 8 for children used to walking; the impact of the Terra Ronca portal is worth every step. Older travelers and people with reduced mobility: the main portal can be seen up close with moderate effort, but the inside of the caves has uneven, unlit ground — not recommended.
