Everyone knows Jalapão — but Tocantins hides a second treasure that is only now entering ecotourists’ radar: the Serras Gerais, in the state’s southeast. Think sandstone walls, canyons with 80-meter waterfalls, rivers of absurdly crystalline water and colonial historic towns, spread across municipalities such as Taipas, Dianópolis, Almas, Natividade, Aurora and Rio da Conceição.
Where they are and how to get there
The region sits 220 to 500 km from Palmas — Natividade, the historic gateway, is about 220 km from the capital. The most practical route is to fly to Palmas and continue by car (asphalt to the base towns, dirt roads to several attractions) or book 4-5 day packages with agencies, which solve logistics, guides and lodging in one go.
What to see
- Cânion Encantado — the postcard: sandstone walls where waterfalls plunge up to 80 meters (moderate trail with rocky stretches).
- Lagoa da Serra and Lagoa do Japonês — blue crystal-clear pools for floating with a mask (an easy, delightful activity for all ages).
- Vale Encantado — rivers that vanish into crevices and run beneath the rock.
- Fortaleza dos Guardiões — rock formations that look like stone sentinels.
- Urubu Rei, Cortina and Pelados waterfalls — the region’s circuit of falls.
- Natividade — an 18th-century historic center with churches, colonial houses and the famous gold filigree jewelry.
When to go
From May to October, in the dry season, the rivers reach peak transparency and the dirt roads stay firm. December to March concentrates the rains. Temperatures are pure cerrado: hot days, mild mornings — start your outings early.
Suggested itinerary (5 days)
Day 1: Palmas → Natividade (historic center + Lagoa da Serra). Days 2 to 4: base in Taipas/Dianópolis for Rio Azuis, Vale Encantado, lagoons and waterfalls. Day 5: Cânion Encantado and the return. If you have the energy, pair it with Jalapão — agencies already operate the two-region combo, an unbeatable cerrado double bill.
🥾 Who is it for?
Effort: easy at the lagoons and pools; moderate on the canyon and waterfall trails (rocks and short climbs). Children: the crystal-clear lagoons are perfect from ages 4-5 with a life vest; canyon trails from age 10. Seniors and reduced mobility: the easy-access lagoons and Natividade’s historic center are great outings; the canyons demand sure footing on uneven ground — ask the agency about attractions with car access. The region’s calm pace and small crowds help everyone.
