Serra dos Órgãos: Complete Guide to Rio’s Postcard Mountain Park

State: Rio de Janeiro

Few mountain silhouettes are as Brazilian as the Dedo de Deus pointing at the Rio de Janeiro sky. It is the calling card of the Parque Nacional da Serra dos Órgãos (PARNASO), created in 1939 between Petrópolis, Teresópolis and Guapimirim — the most traditional mountain playground in Brazil, a little over an hour from Rio de Janeiro.

The three gates

  • Teresópolis site — the most structured: visitor center, natural pools, a 360° viewpoint and the start of the Pedra do Sino trail.
  • Petrópolis site — the gateway to the classic trek and to trails with pools and waterfalls in the Bonfim valley.
  • Guapimirim site — the quietest, with the pools of the Rio Soberbo and head-on views of the Dedo de Deus.

What to do

The menu runs from a half-hour stroll to a 3-day expedition: short trails such as the Cartão Postal and the Mozart Catão (with views of the Dedo de Deus), swims in cold rivers, climbing of the highest order and the legendary Travessia Petrópolis-Teresópolis, 30 km across the heights — unpacked in our article on the trek. For those who want the summit without a big pack, the Pedra do Sino (the high point, ~2,275 m) can be done in one long day or with a night out. And there are options for every pace — we have gathered the easy ones in the article on trails for everyone.

Prices and logistics

Entry is free at all three sites — Teresópolis, Petrópolis and Guapimirim — under an arrangement that ICMBio itself describes as temporary, with a daily visitor limit per site (1,000 in the lower part of Teresópolis, 400 in the lower part of Petrópolis, 500 in Guapimirim and 100 a day in each upper part). The park closes on Mondays for maintenance. Because the free entry is temporary, check the rule in force on the ICMBio site before traveling. Guides are not compulsory on the short trails, but they make a difference on the long ones — the weather in these mountains changes in minutes. Teresópolis and Petrópolis have full hotel provision and mountain cooking to round off the days.

When to go

From May to September (the dry winter), clear skies for the views and firm trails — take a warm layer: the top of the range gets cold. In summer, daily rain calls for early starts and total respect for storm warnings.

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: from easy (natural pools, viewpoints, Cartão Postal) to intense (Pedra do Sino, the trek). Children: the sites have excellent trails and pools from ages 4-5; summits from 12 with preparation. Older travelers and reduced mobility: the visitor areas of all three sites are reachable by car with short walks — you can see the Dedo de Deus, swim in the river and have lunch in the mountains without a single hard trail.
