Itacaré: The Complete Guide to Beaches, Trails and Waterfalls on the Cacao Coast

State: Bahia

Few places on the Brazilian coast deliver the combination found in Itacaré: wild beaches embraced by Atlantic Forest, waves that draw surfers from around the world, hidden waterfalls and a charming village at the mouth of the Rio de Contas. On the Cacao Coast in southern Bahia, this is paradise for anyone who likes reaching the beach by walking a forest trail.

Where it is and how to get there

Itacaré sits about 70 km from Ilhéus, whose airport receives flights from Brazil’s main capitals. From there, the road to the village winds between cacao farms and stretches of preserved forest. Coming from the south, you can pair the trip with the Maraú Peninsula, across the river mouth.

The village beaches

A string of coves within walking distance of the center. Praia da Concha is the most structured, with calm seas — great for families. Tiririca is the surf spot, with consistent waves and a young vibe; Resende and Costa complete the sequence of green-framed coves, all reachable on foot.

Wild beaches

Itacaré’s soul lives on the beaches reached by forest trails. Prainha, repeatedly voted among Brazil’s most beautiful, demands a hike and rewards you with nearly deserted golden sand. On the road to Ilhéus, Engenhoca (a 20-minute trail, with a freshwater creek), Havaizinho, Camboinha and the 3.5 km of sand at Itacarezinho form the most famous quartet — walking them in sequence is the classic Four Beaches walk.

Waterfalls and forest

The green framing the beaches belongs to one of the richest stretches of Atlantic Forest in the country, partly protected by Serra do Conduru State Park, famous for its staggering plant biodiversity. Nearby, waterfalls like Tijuípe, right off the Itacaré–Ilhéus road, guarantee a freshwater dip after the beach. Canoe and stand-up paddle trips on the Rio de Contas close the day with a golden sunset.

When to go

Summer, from December to March, has the longest days and the liveliest village. For empty beaches and good prices, April to June and August to November are excellent — and the surf is good all year. Quick showers are part of Atlantic Forest weather in any month.

Practical tips

  • The agencies on Rua da Pituba organize guided hikes, surf lessons and river trips.
  • Do the more remote trails in a group or with a local guide.
  • Bring sneakers for the trails and small cash: several wild beaches have no facilities.
  • Book your pousada in advance for summer and holidays — the village fills up.

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: light on the village beaches; moderate on the wild-beach trails. Children: Concha for the little ones; trails from age 6-8 depending on distance. Seniors and reduced mobility: the town beaches are easy to reach; Itacarezinho has parking near the sand — you can enjoy the best of Itacaré without a trail.
