Gruta do Catão: Skylights, an Underground River and the West of Bahia’s Secret Postcard

Type: Cave & Grotto Destination: São Desidério

Imagine a cathedral tunnel where a river of bluish water runs in the dark — and, every so often, the ceiling opens into skylights that pour columns of light onto the water. This is the Gruta do Catão, the postcard of São Desidério and one of the most scenic caves in Brazil that almost nobody has photographed yet.

What the visit is like

The cave is the underground passage of the Rio João Rodrigues: you walk the main chamber along a trail on the inner bank, with the river for company — walls 30+ m high, collapsed blocks forming “windows” and the skylights marking the path of light. The tourist stretch takes 1-2 hours with a local guide (R$ 100-200 for the outing, booked in advance); speleologists and technical divers explore far beyond. Midday = beams of light straight down, the photographers’ hour.

What makes the Catão special

  • Scale: chambers that swallow buildings — the feeling of Terra Ronca, without the 8 hours of road to get there.
  • The living river: a cave with an active river is a rare ecosystem — blind fish, fishing bats and the acoustics of water in the dark.
  • Solitude: on a weekday, it is entirely possible to have the WHOLE cave to your group. Try that in any famous cave in the country.

Before you go

The standard kit from our caving checklist (headlamp + backup light + grippy footwear), advance booking with a guide, and the dry season — in the rains the river rules the cave and visits close. Total respect for the speleothems and the bats: the Catão has reached us intact precisely because few people visit it; keeping it intact with many is our part of the bargain.

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: moderate — a descent with a guide to the cave chamber, with slippery sections. Children: from age 10. Seniors and reduced mobility: not recommended — uneven floor and limited natural light.
