The Deserted Beach and the Parrot Fly-In: Superagui’s Twin Spectacles

Superagui holds two daily spectacles — one of space, one of wings — that alone justify the 3-hour boat ride to the village.

Praia Deserta: 38 km of nothing (or everything)

Three kilometers from the village (on foot or by rented bike), Praia Deserta — the Deserted Beach — lives up to its name with rigor: 38 kilometers of firm sand without a single building — just low dunes, the Atlantic on one side and the park’s forest on the other. Walk for an hour and the solitude becomes absolute; pedal all morning and you might cross paths with one fisherman and three vultures. The natural pools where dark-water creeks meet the sea are the swimming stops; high tide shortens some stretches — ask in the village before going far. It is the kind of place that recalibrates your notion of emptiness: here, it is the luxury.

The red-faced parrot fly-in

In the late afternoon, the boats anchor off Ilha dos Pinheiros and the sky begins to speckle with green: hundreds of red-faced parrots — an endangered species found only on this stretch of coast — return noisily to their roost, in pairs and flocks crossing the twilight. The peak is March-April, but the scene happens year-round; village boatmen run the outing (~R$ 50-80/person) with the sunset thrown in on the way back. Silence on board, binoculars in hand, a memory forever.

Tips

  • A bike is the vehicle of the Deserta: rent one in the village and bring water/snacks (there is NOTHING along the way — that is the point).
  • Sunscreen, a hat and a UV shirt: shade is a rare commodity.
  • For the fly-in, weekdays mean fewer boats and more relaxed birds.
  • Zero drones over Ilha dos Pinheiros — the roost is a sanctuary.

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: easy at the fly-in (seated boat ride); easy to moderate on the Deserta (you choose the mileage). Children: the fly-in is magical at any age; on the Deserta, short doses with plenty of water. Seniors and people with reduced mobility: the boat-based fly-in is the perfect experience — contemplative and walk-free; the Deserta means walking on sand (firm at low tide, which helps). Bird photographers: bring the long lens and an open heart.
