Pôr do sol com nuvens dramáticas sobre terreno verde de chapada

The Waterfalls of Chapada das Mesas: Santuário, São Romão and the Giants of Tocantins

Chapada das Mesas is, above all, a waterfall factory — fed by a water table that seeps from the sandstone all year round. Here is the honest ranking of its falls, from the epic to the delightful, with the logistics for each one. The general guide to the region is here.

1. Cachoeira do Santuário (Pedra Caída) — the cathedral

You walk through a canyon of 40 m walls that narrow into a stone hall where the fall plunges into an emerald pool lit by a shaft of sky. It is the most scenic waterfall in Maranhão — and the most structured (inside the Pedra Caída complex, R$ 90 entry). Go early: the shaft of light works best in the morning.

2. São Romão — the thunder

The biggest in volume: 25 m tall by nearly 100 m wide, roaring in the middle of the National Park (R$ 40 + mandatory 4×4, ~50 km of sand). In the wet season it is a private Iguaçu; in the dry, it gains beaches and lets you swim close to the curtain of water. The classic tour pairs it with neighboring Cachoeira da Prata, whose stepped veils are perfect for a natural hydromassage.

3. Santa Bárbara — the 75 meters

In the Poço Azul complex (Riachão, R$ 90 for the combo): a thread of water dropping 75 m into an amphitheatre of pink rock. You bathe in the shallow pool at the base, looking up until your neck aches. On the same ticket, Poço Azul completes the day — details in the blue waters of Riachão.

4. The falls inside Pedra Caída

Beyond the Santuário, the complex hides Caverna and Capelão, smaller falls in canyons of their own — worth the afternoon if you spend the whole day there (complete with a 1,200 m cable car over the valley and ziplines for the electrified).

How to build your days

DayBlock
1Full Pedra Caída (Santuário early + Caverna/Capelão + cable car)
2National Park 4×4: São Romão + Prata + sunset on the table mountains
3Riachão: Encanto Azul + Poço Azul + Santa Bárbara
Three days, three water ecosystems — and you understand why people who know Chapada das Mesas stop saying they have “seen enough waterfalls”.

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: moderate — each complex has its own trail, usually short and rocky. Children: from age 6; São Romão’s natural pools are wide. Seniors and reduced mobility: prioritise Poço Azul and falls with direct access; the local guides know the easiest options.
