Foz do Iguaçu would be a first-rate destination even without the Falls — few places in the world stack so many heavyweight experiences within a 30 km radius. These are the three no ecotourist should skip.
Parque das Aves
At the national park’s doorstep, Parque das Aves is the world’s largest aviary devoted to Atlantic Forest birds — and a serious conservation center: rescued macaws, harpy eagles in a breeding program and the famous immersion aviaries where toucans land an arm’s length away. Tickets sold online on the official site; 2-3 hours of visit, photographic thrills guaranteed. It works as a warm-up or dessert to the Falls.
Itaipu Binacional
The power plant that was once the world’s largest remains an astonishment of scale: the 8 km dam, the spillways and the numbers that defy comprehension (energy for ~9% of Brazil and ~90% of Paraguay). Panoramic tours (R$ 63) and the special circuit inside the plant (R$ 185) depart from the visitor center; the dam’s night illumination is an outing of its own. Engineering ecotourism — and the biological refuge next door offsets the concrete.
Three Borders Landmark
At the meeting of the Iguaçu and Paraná rivers, three obelisks face each other: Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay in a single turn of the head. The Brazilian complex has dance shows, gastronomy and the most international sunset in the country (paid entry). The perfect late afternoon to close any day of the trip.
Border bonus
With extra time: shopping in Ciudad del Este (Paraguay), alfajores and wines in Puerto Iguazú (Argentina) and the Buddhist temple overlooking the three nations. Foz is South America’s busiest corner — enjoy the traffic of cultures.
🥾 Who is it for?
Effort: light — all three attractions run on flat walkways and internal transport. Children: Parque das Aves is possibly the best kids’ outing in southern Brazil; Itaipu impresses the older ones. Seniors and people with disabilities: all three are adapted (ramps, vehicles, accessible restrooms) — Foz as a whole is a benchmark in welcoming every profile. The entire itinerary is possible without a single physical barrier.
