Above 2,400 meters, Itatiaia trades forest for stone: a plateau of golden grasslands and giant blocks that is home to two of Brazil’s most coveted summits — Agulhas Negras (2,791 m, the country’s 5th-highest mountain) and the Prateleiras (2,548 m), with blocks stacked like a giant’s crockery.
The base: Abrigo Rebouças
Everything starts at the Garganta do Registro gate (BR-354, RJ-MG border), heading for the historic Abrigo Rebouças (~R$ 60/night as of Aug/2026, advance booking) — the overnight base for dawn summit pushes. Sleeping there, under the plateau’s starry sky and in cold that drops past -5 °C in winter, is already half the experience.
Prateleiras: the democratic summit
A trail of ~2h30 (one way) across high-altitude grasslands to the block puzzle of the summit — the final meters ask for hands and a little courage, but nothing technical. The 360° view reaches the Paraíba Valley, the Mantiqueira and, on clear days, the sea. Moderate effort, disproportionate reward.
Agulhas Negras: the technical challenge
The climb to the highest point has two parts: the approach hike and the final scrambling stretch, with vertical passages where a guide is required for anyone without experience — the agencies in Itatiaia and Itamonte operate with ropes and helmets. From the top, Brazil looks small down below. Intense effort; no place for vertigo.
Plateau tips
- Start before dawn: wind and clouds rise with the day.
- Layers: thermal + fleece + windbreaker, gloves and a beanie — even at the height of summer.
- Water matters: 2-3 liters; there are no reliable sources near the summits.
- Extra sunscreen: radiation at 2,700 m is unforgiving.
- Thunderstorm on the horizon? Descend. The plateau is the worst place in the Southeast to meet lightning.
🥾 Who is it for?
Effort: Prateleiras moderate; Agulhas Negras intense with technical stretches. Children: Prateleiras from age 10-12 with trail experience; Agulhas Negras 14+ with a guide. Seniors and reduced mobility: the plateau itself can be visited by car with short walks — worth the trip for the landscape alone; the summits demand full mobility and healthy knees. Fit mountaineers over 60 summit regularly — the secret, as always, is honesty with your own body.
