No photo prepares you for the scale. Gruta do Janelão, the jewel of Cavernas do Peruaçu National Park, is a succession of chambers that could hold stacked cathedrals — crossed by the Peruaçu River and lit by skylights (“janelões”) that pour columns of light onto the cave floor. It is the kind of place that recalibrates what you call grand.
The Perna da Bailarina
At the heart of the cave hangs the star: a stalactite of unique proportions, considered the largest in the world, whose slender, curved silhouette recalls a ballerina’s leg en pointe. Seeing it in person, with human scale beside it, explains the nickname instantly — and the silence that falls over groups at that point is always the same.
What the visit is like
The classic route descends into the valley by natural stairways and follows the river through the cave — about 5h30 between the access trail and the internal crossing, always with a credentialed guide and a helmet. There is no artificial lighting: the skylights put on the show, especially between 10am and 2pm, when the light shafts fall vertically and set the ochre walls aglow. Fig trees clinging to the rims of the skylights drop roots dozens of meters long — film scenery, no CGI.
Tips
- Arrange the right time slot with your guide to catch the skylight light.
- Grippy sneakers: damp slabs and blocks along the internal route.
- Water (2 liters), a hat for the open stretches and a camera with a full battery.
- Do not touch the speleothems or leave the marked path — the floor holds archaeological sites.
- Pair it on the same day with Lapa dos Desenhos, its route neighbor.
🥾 Who is it for?
Effort: moderate — stairways into the valley (the way back climbs!), uneven footing and heat on the outside stretch. Children: from age 7-8 with stamina for the stairs. Seniors and reduced mobility: the full descent demands healthy joints; for those who walk with difficulty, viewpoints and the initial stretches already reveal the monumental mouth — arrange a partial route with your guide. Vertigo is not an issue: the route has no exposed edges.
