Prateleiras: The Stone Blocks Above 2,500 m on the Itatiaia Plateau

Type: Trail Destination: Itatiaia

The Prateleiras are the most recognizable sculpture on the plateau of Itatiaia National Park: giant blocks of rock stacked above 2,500 meters, like stone shelves assembled over the high grasslands. The walk to the base is accessible to anyone with legs; the top, as with the park’s great mountains, asks for a scramble.

Why visit

For the scenery — there is nothing like it in the country. The route crosses the plateau of golden grass and stone, the horizon open to the Paraíba Valley, and ends at the labyrinth of blocks that gives the place its name. It is the natural partner of Pico das Agulhas Negras, and the Agulhas Negras and Prateleiras guide helps you build the upper-section itinerary.

Access and logistics

  • Sector — the park’s upper section, from the Itamonte (MG) side; tickets and information on the official visitation channel (pnitatiaia.com.br).
  • Support point — the base sits about 2.5 km from Abrigo Rebouças, following the plateau.
  • Difficulty — moderate to the base; hard at the top, with scrambling passages between blocks.
  • Guides — registered guides listed on the official ICMBio site; recommended for anyone new to the plateau.

What to expect from the visit

A contemplative walk that turns into adventure at the end. Between the blocks, every passage demands attention: smooth rock, deep gaps and constant wind. There is no single “right” way at the top — which is exactly why prudence and experienced company are worth more than haste. At the base, the formations already yield the plateau’s most beautiful photos, with incredible light in late afternoon — and when low fog rolls in, the whole ensemble vanishes and reappears like scenery from another planet, a spectacle of its own for the patient.

When to go and precautions

From May to September the weather is most stable, with dry cold and freezing nights; in summer, the plateau brews afternoon storms — leave early, return early. Warm layers, a windbreaker, water and sun protection always, even in the cold. Check conditions and notices on the official channel before going; closed fog changes everything up here.

🥾 Who is it for?

For walkers who want Itatiaia’s most dramatic scenery without necessarily taking on the summit: the base is generous to those who go at their own pace. The top is for those who accept exposed scrambling — ideally with a guide.
