A hundred kilometers from Fortaleza the thermometer drops, the landscape closes into forest and the smell turns to coffee: the Serra de Baturité is an enclave of Atlantic Forest floating above the sertão — an “island of humidity” that shelters unique species, centuries-old shade-grown coffee plantations and charming Guaramiranga, the Ceará capital of cool weather. The perfect counterpoint to a beach trip in Ceará. Complete guide.
What to do
- Pico Alto (1,115 m) — the 2nd highest point in Ceará: sunset above the clouds and, at night, the sea of lights of the sertão.
- APA trails — dense forest, bromeliads and the chance to hear (and see) the gray-breasted parakeet, a critically endangered bird found only in the humid ranges of Ceará — Baturité is key territory for birdwatching in the Northeast.
- Shade-grown coffee route — centuries-old farms grow coffee IN THE SHADE of the forest (a system that conserves it!): visits with harvesting, roasting and tasting (R$ 30-80).
- Guaramiranga — a village of theatre, festivals (jazz at Carnival!), fondue-with-the-weather cuisine and guesthouses with fireplaces: the full itinerary in a weekend in Guaramiranga.
- Mosteiro dos Jesuítas (Baturité) and the historic houses of the coffee era.

Why the range matters
Baturité is a “highland brejo”: a relic of Atlantic Forest that survived surrounded by sertão since the last ice age. Shade-grown coffee — instead of felling the forest, you plant UNDERNEATH it — is the economic model that kept it standing, and every night in a guesthouse and every sack of coffee bought on the range is a vote for its continuity. Ecotourism smelling of freshly brewed coffee: hard to argue against.
🥾 Who is it for?
Effort: easy — mountain roads, viewpoints, coffee plantations and a mild climate. Children: all ages; the cool weather is a relief in Ceará. Older travelers and reduced mobility: an ideal destination — journeys by car, welcoming guesthouses and short optional walks.
