Boat Tour in Capitólio: Canyons, Waterfalls and the Right Itinerary

Destination: Capitólio

The moment the boat cuts its engine inside the corridor of rock walls is the climax of any trip to Capitólio: green water, stone towers 20+ meters high and waterfalls dripping straight into the lake. This practical guide organizes the tour so that all you have to worry about is taking photographs.

Which boat to choose

  • Shared speedboat (R$ 70-90, about 3h) — nimble, gets closer to the waterfalls and includes the Cascatinha; seats are limited, book ahead.
  • Chalana (R$ 45, about 3h) — the family option: slow, roomy, covered and with a toilet; free for under-5s and older people.
  • Catamaran (R$ 75) — a comfortable middle ground with music and facilities.
  • Private speedboat (about R$ 2,000/7h) — total freedom of route and timing for groups.

The classic itinerary

Departure from the area of the Rio Turvo bridge (MG-050) heading for the canyons with a stop to swim and take photos, Lagoa Azul (a little waterfall on the lake), Vale dos Tucanos and — on the speedboats — the Cascatinha tumbling into the edge of the lake. Half a day is enough; the golden hour (the last afternoon departure) has the best light on the walls.

Safety first

The canyons are also a drainage funnel: heavy rain at the headwaters generates flash floods, and the 2022 accident changed the protocols — today navigation closes preventively with a weather alert, and the approach to the walls is controlled. Follow the pilot without arguing, life jacket always on: the spectacle is big enough seen from a safe distance.

Quick tips

  • Early morning = a smooth lake and less boat traffic.
  • Sunscreen, hat, a waterproof cover for camera/phone.
  • Seasick easily? The chalana and the rear seats of the speedboat rock less.
  • Take cash/Pix: floating kiosks sell snacks along the way.

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: easy — a seated tour with optional swims. Children: all ages on the chalana (a child life jacket is compulsory — confirm sizes when booking); speedboat from age 5. Older travelers and reduced mobility: chalanas have ramp boarding and stable seats — among the most accessible boat tours in the country; tell the operator so they can reserve an easy-access seat.
