Pressed right up against the São Paulo border (and a neighbor of Socorro), Bueno Brandão is southern Minas in its purest state: a rural municipality at around 1,200 meters of altitude where the attractions are clean-water waterfalls, coffee strained through a cloth filter on the farm and dirt lanes winding between pasture and forest. Ecotourism without the varnish — the kind many people look for and few find.
Getting there
About 150 km from São Paulo and 30 minutes from Socorro, reached via Monte Sião and Munhoz or over the range from the Circuito das Águas Paulista. The rural roads are unpaved — easy going in dry weather, to be respected in the rain.
The waterfalls
The star is the Cachoeira do Salto, dropping tens of meters into a stone amphitheatre — an easy viewpoint and a pool for the willing. The municipality adds up dozens of smaller falls on rural properties (many with a token entry fee and a colonial tea room attached): ask at your guesthouse which are open this season — the circuit changes with the water and the farm gates.
The countryside as the attraction
Here the “outing” is rural life itself: artisan distilleries, cheeses and pan-cooked sweets bought at source, horse rides along old drovers’ trails, farm cafés and Minas conversation as a toast. The rural tourism of Bueno Brandão fits into the Socorro circuit — many visitors sleep in one state and spend the day in the other, taking the best of both ranges.
When to go
April to September: firm roads, clear skies and the little chill that calls for a wood stove. In summer the waterfalls fill up — and the dirt roads demand respect. A weekend is enough; the urge to come back is thrown in.
🥾 Who is it for?
Effort: light — nearby viewpoints, short trails and plenty of traveling by car or on horseback. Children: farms with animals + shallow pools = a complete holiday program (all ages). Older travelers and people with reduced mobility: a generous destination — colonial teas, viewpoints reachable by car and the rural pace welcome any stride; only the waterfall pools ask for a firm footing on the rocks. Pair it with the award-winning accessible facilities of neighboring Socorro.
