Ubajara (CE): the Smallest National Park in Brazil Is a Giant Hidden in the Ibiapaba

State: Ceará

High on the Serra da Ibiapaba, 330 km from Fortaleza, the smallest national park in Brazil (~6,000 hectares) delivers more per square meter than many giants: a monumental cave, a cable car that drops down the escarpment over a sea of forest, waterfalls tumbling off the edge of the plateau and a highland climate that lets a Ceará native wear a coat with pride. Ubajara is the darling of ecotourism in Ceará — and this guide shows why.

Logistics

Base yourself in the little town of Ubajara (highland guesthouses R$ 100-250, 18-25°C) or in Tianguá (16 km away, more choice). From Fortaleza it is about 4h30 by car on the BR-222 climbing the range; from Jeri, 3h30 — which makes Ubajara the perfect highland counterpoint on a Ceará beach trip. The park opens Wednesday to Sunday (confirm days and cable car times when planning; maintenance happens).

When to go, and why the Ibiapaba surprises

It works all year; in the “green season” (February to June) the waterfalls fill and the morning mist turns the viewpoints into a sea of cloud. The magic of Ubajara is the contrast: in an hour you go from 35°C backlands to a humid highland forest — an enclave of wetland woodland holding species that “should not” exist in Ceará. Live environmental education: it is what a mountain range does for the climate, and what we lose when we clear one.

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: light by cable car (the smallest national park in Brazil is also one of the most accessible); intense only on the optional steep trail. Children: all ages on the cable car; the trail from age 12. Older travelers and people with reduced mobility: the cable car delivers the range and the view with no effort — an ideal option; the cave has damp sections that need care.
