Ilha do Mel: Guide to the Car-Free Island Paraná Guards So Closely

State: Paraná

Paraná guards its island jewel with a rule that is rare in Brazil: Ilha do Mel admits at most ~5,000 visitors a day — and that jealous limit is exactly what keeps it charming. No cars, no crowds, sand-street villages linked by trails, a centenary lighthouse and beaches that alternate between calm bay and open ocean: this is the southern Brazilian coast at its purest.

Getting there

Boats leave from Pontal do Sul (30 min, around R$ 45 return, hourly departures) and from Paranaguá (1h45, a scenic crossing of the bay). Choose where you land: Nova Brasília (center and lighthouse) or Encantadas (the southern village) — local boats connect the two for about R$ 15.

What to do

  • Farol das Conchas (1872) — 150 steps up to the panorama that became a symbol of Paraná (details in the island trails guide).
  • Gruta das Encantadas — the sea cave of the mermaid legends, visitable at low tide.
  • Fortaleza N. Sra. dos Prazeres (1769) — the historic fort on the northern tip, reached by a 4 km trail or by boat.
  • A beach for every mood — Fora and Grande for surf, Fortaleza and Ponta Oeste for bay calm, Farol as the meeting point.
  • Sunset from the pier — the daily ritual, with the Serra do Mar behind it.

When to go

November to March for the classic summer (book the crossing and your guesthouse ahead in January). June to August for an empty island, dry trails and a refuge mood. Bring cash: the infrastructure is simple and the phone signal is patchy — and that is part of what makes it special.

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: light to moderate — everything is walking, on sand and gentle trails; distances are deceiving in the heat. Children: a safe, playful island; calm bays for the little ones and the cave at low tide for the curious (5+). Older travelers and people with reduced mobility: the absence of vehicles has a price — soft sand and rustic trails make wheelchairs difficult; those who walk slowly enjoy the villages and the beaches near the piers, so choose a guesthouse close to where you land.
