Lopes Mendes: How to Reach Ilha Grande’s Most Famous Beach

Three kilometers of squeaky white sand, turquoise water and no buildings: the three ways to reach Lopes Mendes and how to make the most of the day.

Type: Beach Destination: Ilha Grande

Some places survive the hype — Lopes Mendes is one of them. Three kilometers of white sand so fine it squeaks underfoot, turquoise water with perfect waves and not a single building make it the signature beach of Ilha Grande — and a fixture on lists of the most beautiful beaches on the planet.

The three ways in

  • Boat plus trail (the classic): water taxi from Abraão to Praia do Pouso (about 20 minutes) and a 30-minute walk over a gentle Atlantic Forest hill before the beach finally opens up in front of you. This is how nine out of ten visitors arrive.
  • The full trail (T11): around three hours from Abraão, passing Palmas and Pouso beaches — for anyone who likes to earn the view.
  • Boat with a nearby landing: on calm days some tours anchor at the end of the beach — check in advance whether landing is guaranteed.

The perfect day

Go early (first boat), claim shade under the almond trees at the northern end and bring everything: there are no kiosks — only the odd beach vendor passing through. The open sea brings the strong waves that surfers love (board rental at Pouso); for a calm swim, stay at the far ends of the beach and respect the currents. Late afternoon empties the beach — and the last boat does not wait: confirm the return time when you board.

Pair it with

The classic Lopes Mendes tour usually includes stops at Palmas and Pouso; with a private speedboat or a half-loop, add the southern beaches (Parnaioca, Caxadaço) for a day to remember.

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: light to moderate — the Pouso trail is 30 minutes of gentle climbs on natural steps. Children: from about four or five, most handle the trail well (with breaks); in the water, watch the waves closely — the far ends of the beach are calmer. Older travelers and people with reduced mobility: the Pouso trail is workable for anyone who walks slowly (uneven ground, no handrails); wheelchairs cannot pass — in that case the boat trips along the sheltered side of the island (Lagoa Azul) are a hike-free alternative, with water just as clear.
