Itaimbezinho or Fortaleza? The Duel of the Cambará do Sul Canyons

Every traveler who reaches Cambará do Sul faces the dilemma: with limited time (or limited mist), which canyon comes first? We put the Itaimbezinho and the Fortaleza head to head.

The duel, criterion by criterion

  • Visual impact: Fortaleza wins on IMMENSITY (7.5 km of walls and a view as far as the sea); Itaimbezinho wins on DRAMA (a closed gorge plus waterfalls dropping into it). A technical draw of dropped jaws.
  • Facilities: Itaimbezinho, by a mile — walkways, visitor center, accessibility and a café. Fortaleza is rougher (and wilder for it).
  • Easy trails: Itaimbezinho (the Vértice is almost a city-park stroll with a view from another planet).
  • Serious adventure: a draw — Rio do Boi (Itaimbezinho) versus Malacara (Fortaleza), the two great canyon-floor trails in Brazil.
  • Photography: Fortaleza at dawn (sea of cloud plus the Pedra do Segredo) is unbeatable; Itaimbezinho gives more with the sun high, lighting the gorge.
  • Access: Itaimbezinho has the better road; Fortaleza adds 23 km of dirt (easy going in dry weather).

The verdict

Only one day? First time: Itaimbezinho (facilities plus a guaranteed result). Already know it, or want solitude: Fortaleza. Two days? The right answer: Fortaleza at dawn on day one, Itaimbezinho on the morning of day two — the concessionaire’s combo tickets make the pair cheaper. And if a third day is left over, drop down the range to see it all from below at Praia Grande (Rio do Boi or Malacara).

Golden tip (it applies to both)

Get up early. The afternoon mist is democratic and closes both canyons without warning — the viewpoints at 8.30am have twice the odds of the ones at 2pm. And bring a warm layer even in January: the rim is windy and cold all year round.

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: both have a light way in and an intense canyon floor — the duel respects every level. Children: Itaimbezinho is the safer one with little ones (walkways); at Fortaleza, keep them on a short rein near the edges. Older travelers and people with disabilities: Itaimbezinho wins comfortably — concession facilities, accessible sections and viewpoints close by; at Fortaleza the main viewpoint needs a short walk over rough field. Start with the Itaimbezinho and save the Fortaleza as the extra adventure.
