Cânion Encantado and Vale Encantado: The Vertical Jewels of the Serras Gerais

If the Serras Gerais are Tocantins’ best-kept secret, Cânion Encantado is the vault where it is stored: a sandstone gorge where waterfalls plunge from walls up to 80 meters (260 feet) high, forming clear-water pools ringed by buriti palms. Next door, Vale Encantado hides rivers that dive into the rock and resurface farther on — a geological spectacle rare in Brazil.

Cânion Encantado

The visit starts from the Taipas do Tocantins area with a local guide. The trail descends to the canyon floor over rocks and natural walkways — about 40 minutes to 1 hour of walking with stops — down to the main amphitheater, where the principal waterfall opens like a veil against the orange wall. Swim in the pool, lie on the warm stone slabs and wait for the midday light to set the walls glowing: that is when the photos look too good to be true.

Vale Encantado

The valley tour follows a river that disappears into crevices and runs underground in stretches, forming natural pools and small grottoes along the way. The guides show you where the water dives in and where it re-emerges — and the local stories of enchanted beings and hauntings that give the place its name make the walk even better.

How to visit and what it costs

  • A local guide is mandatory at both attractions — hire one in Taipas or through Serras Gerais agencies (day rates around R$ 150-250 per group).
  • Entry to the private areas runs R$ 20 to R$ 60 per person.
  • Go in the dry season (May to October): in the rains, access closes for safety.
  • Bring grippy sneakers, water, a hat and a dry bag for electronics.
  • Combine both in one day: the canyon in the morning (better light) and the valley in the afternoon.

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: moderate — descents and climbs over uneven rock, no long distances, but demanding balance and sure footing. Children: from ages 8-10 with trail experience; the shallow pools at the entrance suit younger kids staying with an adult. Seniors and reduced mobility: the canyon descent is not recommended for anyone who struggles on uneven ground — for them, the region’s crystal-clear lagoons (like Lagoa da Serra) deliver similar beauty with easy access. Afraid of heights? No problem: there are no exposed-edge stretches.
