Barreirinhas, Atins or Santo Amaro? Where to Stay in the Lençóis Maranhenses

In the Lençóis Maranhenses, the choice of base defines the entire trip: how long you spend in a 4×4, which lagoons you get to see and even what time the generator goes off. The three options have such distinct personalities that it is easy to get badly wrong — this comparison exists so you get it right first time. The complete guide to the park is here.

The profile of each one

Barreirinhas is for a first visit with comfort, families with children and anyone who likes a choice of restaurants — accepting more road time per day of touring. Atins is the refuge of couples and kitesurfers: a sand village between the river and the sea, candlelit dinners and the legendary grilled prawns of Canto do Atins. Santo Amaro is for anyone who came FOR THE LAGOONS: you walk from the guesthouse to the dunes, see the sunset without a 4×4 and sleep in absolute silence — with infrastructure proportional to the purity.

The clever traveler’s strategy

  • 5-6 days: split it — 2 nights in Santo Amaro (immersion) plus 3 in Atins or Barreirinhas (variety plus the Rio Preguiças). Santo Amaro first avoids an anticlimax.
  • September / October: favor Santo Amaro — that is where the water holds out (see the calendar of the lagoons).
  • Adventurers: connect the bases THROUGH the park with the trek on foot — you arrive in Atins in a way no boat can deliver.
  • At all three: bring cash and do not count on the internet — the detox is part of the package.

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: light — comparing bases is pure planning. Children: Barreirinhas has more infrastructure for families; Atins is rustic and charming; Santo Amaro is the most raw. Older travelers and people with reduced mobility: Barreirinhas wins on comfort and access; Atins and Santo Amaro ask for a spirit of adventure.
