There are mountains that hypnotise — Pedra Azul is one of them. The 1,822-meter monolith changes color with the light (blue, green, pink at dusk) and carries on its back a stone “lizard” climbing towards the top. All around, the mountain region of Domingos Martins-ES combines a European climate, mountain gastronomy and a state park that holds one of the most enjoyable trails in the Southeast.
Getting there
About 100 km from Vitória on the BR-262 (1h30 on a good road), Pedra Azul announces itself from far off. The base is the charming Rota do Lagarto — 8 km of scenic road curling around the monolith, dotted with mountain guesthouses, colonial cafés and restaurants serving fondue and trout. Vitória → the mountains is the capixaba favorite day trip, but staying the night is another journey altogether.
The state park
Parque Estadual da Pedra Azul protects the monolith and offers two experiences: the interpretive lookout trail (easy, with views of the rock and the valley) and the famous natural pools trail — a climb with rope sections up the rock to nine pools carved into the granite (full article: the natural pools of Pedra Azul). Entry is free, visiting is capped (around 150 a day on the pools trail), and it closes on Mondays.
Beyond the rock
The region is worth extra days: Domingos Martins and its Pomeranian heritage (festivals, beers and architecture), neighboring Pedra do Lagarto, award-winning high-altitude coffees and, for walkers, Forno Grande in Castelo — another state park of rock walls an hour away. In winter, fireplaces and mist; in summer, afternoons in natural pools.
When to go
April to October: clear skies to watch the rock change color and the pools trail open (it closes in the rain). A mountain chill at night all year round — bring a coat even in summer.
🥾 Who is it for?
Effort: easy at the lookouts and on the Rota do Lagarto; moderate with a shot of adrenaline on the pools trail (ropes!). Children: lookouts and cafés for all ages; the pools from ages 8-10 with an adventurous spirit. Seniors and reduced mobility: the Rota do Lagarto is the perfect outing — views of the rock without effort, welcoming restaurants and lookouts close to the car; the pools trail requires full mobility.
