There is no landscape like it on the planet: 155,000 hectares of white dunes that, in the right season, fill with thousands of blue-green freshwater lagoons. The Lençóis Maranhenses National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2024 — is the most surreal destination in Brazil, and this guide organizes the trip: bases, tours, costs and the question that decides everything (when to go).
How to get there
Fly into São Luís and continue overland: 4 hours by van or transfer to Barreirinhas (R$ 120-180), or 5-6 hours to Santo Amaro (the final stretch on sand, 4×4 only). Atins is an hour downriver from Barreirinhas by boat. Inside the park, EVERY journey is made in accredited 4x4s with local drivers — the dunes do not forgive people who set off on their own.
The three bases (right choice = right trip)
Barreirinhas is the gateway with full infrastructure; Atins is the rustic-charming village between the river and the sea; Santo Amaro is total immersion, practically inside the park. The choice changes the trip so much that it earned an article of its own: Barreirinhas, Atins or Santo Amaro?
The essential tours
| Tour | 2026 reference | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Lagoa Azul or Lagoa Bonita circuit (4×4) | R$ 120-200 | The Barreirinhas classic: a whole afternoon of dunes and swims until sunset |
| Santo Amaro lagoons (Gaivota, Betânia and others) | R$ 150-250 | The fullest and least crowded — the best of the park |
| Rio Preguiças by boat (Vassouras, Mandacaru and Caburé) | R$ 130-200 | Small dunes, a lighthouse and fishing villages |
| Atins: Canto do Atins and the northern lagoons | R$ 200-350 (quad bike / 4×4) | Dunes meeting the sea, plus the famous prawns at Luzia’s and Antônio’s |
| Trek across the park (2-4 days) | R$ 900-1,800 | Crossing the desert sleeping in oases — see the trek guide |
When to go (the golden question)
The Lençóis run on their own clock: it rains from January to May, the lagoons fill and are perfect from May/June to September — in October they start to drop and by the end of the year they are a memory. Getting the season wrong is the difference between paradise and a beautiful-but-dry desert. The month-by-month calendar is in the best time for the Lençóis.
What it costs, and the ecotourist’s rules
Guesthouses: R$ 150-400 in Barreirinhas, R$ 250-800 in Atins and Santo Amaro. Five days come to R$ 2,500-4,500 per person including flights. Bring CASH (cards and signal fail outside Barreirinhas), reef-safe sunscreen (the lagoons are a nursery for fish that bury themselves and sleep through the dry season — the chemistry kills them), and always follow your driver: driving off the marked tracks destroys the dune-fixing vegetation that takes decades to grow back.
🥾 Who is it for?
Effort: moderate — climbing soft-sand dunes is tiring, but the distances on the classic circuits are short. Children: paradise from ages 4-5 — warm, shallow-edged lagoons. Older travelers and people with reduced mobility: the 4×4 gets close to the circuits; the climb up the first dune is the only real obstacle — taken slowly and with support, many manage it, and the reward is immense.
💡 Golden tip: the Lençóis are the grand finale of the Rota das Emoções, the crossing that starts in Jericoacoara and passes through the Delta do Parnaíba. With 7 to 10 days, consider doing the whole route.
