Gonçalves: the Discreet Refuge of the Minas Mantiqueira

State: Minas Gerais

While Monte Verde and Campos do Jordão compete for the crowds, a village of 4,000 people on the other side of the range cultivates the luxury its neighbors lack: silence. Gonçalves, in southern Minas, is the Mantiqueira in the raw — little dirt roads, icy waterfalls, lookouts over a sea of hills and a food scene that surprises anyone who turns up unprepared.

Getting there

About 200 km from São Paulo (via the Fernão Dias to Camanducaia, then up into the range), Gonçalves spreads across rural districts linked by well-maintained dirt roads — an ordinary car copes, but drive in daylight. Mobile signal is shy (Vivo works best): tell your guesthouse what time you are arriving and embrace the detox.

What to do

  • Pedra do Forno — the postcard: a hollow in the rock framing the valley, on a medium-grade trail (full article: Pedra do Forno).
  • Cachoeira das Bromélias — named by locals as the most beautiful, deep in the forest.
  • Sete Quedas and Cachoeira do Retiro — icy pools with easy access and facilities.
  • Mirante do Cruzeiro — the classic sunset over the village and the ranges.
  • Rural roads — by car or bike, gathering landscapes, cheeses and preserves from gate to gate.

The mountain table

Gonçalves has become a Mantiqueira food stop: mushrooms and pine nuts from the range, trout, new local olive oils (the Mantiqueira has turned into a terroir of award-winning olive groves), jams, honeys and high-altitude coffees. Rustic-chic restaurants with live music round off the cold evenings — book a table at weekends.

When to go

Every season has its charm: April to September for the chill, the fireplace and starry skies; summer for full waterfalls (with afternoon rain). Two to three days cover the essentials — but the pace of the place tends to stretch bookings.

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: easy at the lookouts and organized waterfalls; moderate on the trails (Pedra do Forno). Children: shallow pools and spoonfuls of homemade sweets please them from an early age; the Forno trail from ages 8-10. Seniors and reduced mobility: a calm, adaptable destination — lookouts by car, welcoming restaurants and waterfalls with short access; the dirt roads ask only for patience.
