Only three rivers in the world empty into open sea through a delta: the Nile, the Mekong and the Parnaíba. The Brazilian member of that trio is a labyrinth of 2,700 km² of creeks, mangroves, dunes and islands between Piauí and Maranhão — home to giant crabs, caimans, capuchin monkeys and the reddest scene in Brazil: the scarlet ibis fly-in. Here is the complete guide to the delta.
Base and access
The gateway is Parnaíba (PI), with its own airport (limited flights) or access via Teresina (340 km) and São Luís. The tours leave from Porto dos Tatus, 15 minutes from the center. The town has the charm of its salted-beef-era houses in the historic Porto das Barcas quarter — set aside an evening for the crab restaurants.
The tours
| Tour | 2026 reference | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Classic delta (speedboat, full day) | R$ 150 – R$ 250 | Creeks, a swim at the dunes of Ilha do Caju / Canárias, a fish lunch and the fly-in on the way back |
| Delta at dusk (focused on the fly-in) | R$ 130 – R$ 200 | An afternoon departure straight to the mangrove roosts of the scarlet ibis |
| Crab-catchers’ experience (Ilha das Canárias) | R$ 80 – R$ 150 | A traditional community teaches the “braçada” technique for catching the uçá crab in the mangrove |
| Praia Pedra do Sal and Lagoa do Portinho | R$ 60 – R$ 120 | Coastal add-ons around Parnaíba for a spare day |
When to go
July to December: dry season, open skies, golden dunes and plentiful fly-ins. In the first half of the year it rains hard and some tours are shortened — but the delta in full green has its own beauty. The fly-in happens all year (the roost is permanent); what changes is the comfort of the trip. Everything about the red spectacle is in the scarlet ibis fly-in.
The delta on the bigger route
The Delta is the centrepiece of the north-eastern trio that foreign visitors call the best road trip in Brazil: Jericoacoara to the east, Lençóis Maranhenses to the west — the legendary Rota das Emoções, with the delta as the filling. Two days here (delta plus the community experience) is the perfect measure. And an ecotourist knows: buy crab from the community, respect the closed season (December to May for the uçá) and never ask the boatman to “get closer” to the roost — that is what binoculars are for.
🥾 Who is it for?
Effort: light — the Delta is visited by boat, seated and amazed. Children: all ages; the fly-in and the crabs entertain anyone. Older travelers and people with reduced mobility: simple boarding in Parnaíba and a contemplative, seated trip — one of the great destinations for the whole family. Wheelchair users: boarding the boats depends on assistance; confirm the conditions with the operator.
