Chapada dos Guimarães: Complete 2026 Guide — Véu de Noiva, Caves and Cidade de Pedra

State: Mato Grosso

Sixty kilometers from Cuiabá, the Chapada dos Guimarães raises walls of red sandstone on the exact border between the cerrado and the Amazon — with the most photogenic waterfall in central Brazil, caves that look like another planet and viewpoints where the country seems to have no end. It is the perfect companion to the North Pantanal, and this guide shows how to make the most of it: attractions, 2026 prices and the logistics from Cuiabá.

The national park (and its star, Véu de Noiva)

The Chapada dos Guimarães National Park has free entry — a precious rarity. The Véu de Noiva viewpoint, an 86-meter fall framed by red cliffs with macaws flying below your feet, is minutes from the parking lot. The Circuito das Cachoeiras (6 km, entry only until midday) strings together half a dozen falls with pools to swim in. Arrive early: places on the circuit are limited.

When to go

Dry season from April to September: clear water, safe trails and open skies at the viewpoints. In the rains (October to March) the waterfalls fill and the landscape explodes into green, but pools turn cloudy and trails get slippery. The town is pleasant all year, with cool nights at altitude.

Logistics and what the trip costs

Base yourself in the charming little town of Chapada dos Guimarães (guesthouses from R$ 150 to R$ 450 a double) or make it a day trip from Cuiabá — we built the ideal plan in Chapada dos Guimarães from Cuiabá. Three full days cost R$ 1,200 to R$ 2,500 per person (excluding flights). And the dream combination for an ecotourist in Mato Grosso: Chapada plus Pantanal on the same trip — cliffs and safari three hours apart.

Respect the sandstone

  • Sandstone is fragile rock: do not climb the cliffs and do not leave the marked trails.
  • The park is an aquifer recharge area — carry ALL your rubbish back out, including food waste.
  • Accredited guides are compulsory at several attractions and are the living memory of the Chapada: enjoy the stories.

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: light to moderate — Véu de Noiva is admired from a viewpoint a few steps from the parking lot; the inner trails ask for more. Children: a great family destination — viewpoints, Cidade de Pedra and river beaches suit every age. Older travelers and people with reduced mobility: one of the most accessible parks in central Brazil — the main viewpoints are meters from the car.
