Cananéia: Guide to the Mother Town of Brazil and the Sea of Dolphins

State: São Paulo

At the far south of the São Paulo coast, well away from the fashionable circuit, one of the oldest settlements in the country holds on: Cananéia, the “mother town of Brazil” (1531), where colonial houses look out over an estuary of calm water patrolled by Guiana dolphins — and where mangrove oysters go from water to table in a matter of hours. It is the base of the Lagamar, one of the largest marine nurseries in the South Atlantic.

Getting there

About 270 km from São Paulo along the Régis Bittencourt (BR-116) to Jacupiranga, then the road that drops down to the sea. The town is small and charming; the harbor in the center is the starting point for everything — including the 49 accredited boats that cross to Ilha do Cardoso.

What to do

  • Watch the Guiana dolphins — permanent residents of the estuary, they turn up on practically every boat trip (and even from the pier on a good day).
  • Ilha do Cardoso — the wild state park with deserted beaches and caiçara communities (full article: Ilha do Cardoso).
  • Historic center — a seventeenth-century church, colorful houses and the municipal museum with the story of the “first settlement”.
  • Mandira oysters — the neighboring quilombola community farms award-winning oysters in a sustainable system; tasting them at source is unmissable.
  • Mangroves and sambaquis — boat and kayak trips reveal the Lagamar from the inside, with herons, scarlet ibis and mounds of thousand-year-old shells.

When to go

April to November: settled weather, a glassy estuary and a quiet town. Summer brings crowds and quick downpours. Whatever the season, late afternoon on the pier — dolphins, boats coming home and the Lagamar sky catching fire — is the daily postcard.

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: easy — a flat town, boat trips and short walks. Children: guaranteed dolphins + calm beaches = a success at any age. Seniors and reduced mobility: one of the most accessible nautical destinations in São Paulo state — boarding at the central pier with assistance, a flat center and oysters that require no effort at all; Ilha do Cardoso asks more (see the dedicated article). Cananéia is the coast in contemplative mode.
