Baixio: The Best-Kept Secret on Bahia’s Costa dos Coqueiros

State: Bahia

While Praia do Forte and Imbassaí draw the crowds, a village 130 km north of Salvador remains almost untouched: Baixio, a district of Esplanada, on the Costa dos Coqueiros. It is 16 km of coastline where white dunes, dense coconut groves, freshwater lagoons and the mouth of the Inhambupe River take turns shaping the landscape — one of those places you think twice about telling anyone else.

Where it is and how to get there

Baixio sits on the northern coast of Bahia, about 130 km from Salvador airport — a little over 2 hours along the Linha Verde (BA-099), the scenic road that follows the Costa dos Coqueiros. You can go by rental car, transfer or bus to Esplanada with a local leg to finish. The quiet access is part of the filter that keeps the place preserved.

Beaches and the mouth of the Inhambupe

The beaches are wide, pale-sanded and open to the sea, framed by low cliffs and coconut groves that seem to go on forever. The most special spot is the mouth of the Inhambupe River, where the river draws curves in the sand before meeting the sea — at low tide sandbanks and warm pools form, perfect for spending the day. Simple beach shacks serve fresh fish and moqueca at Bahian pace.

Lagoons, dunes and lookouts

Behind the beach line, a system of freshwater lagoons — Azul, da Panela and Verde — mirrors the sky between dunes and restinga, with clean water for swimming and kayaking. 4×4 rides along the sand tracks reach the Mamucabo and Vista hills, natural lookouts for watching the sunset paint the dunes. Small waterfalls nearby round out the freshwater menu. We have prepared an article just about the lagoons of Baixio.

Where to stay and when to go

The village has everything from simple guesthouses to charming boutique hotels out on the river mouth point. The climate is good all year; from September to March the days are drier and sunnier. Even in high season, “busy” in Baixio means half a dozen umbrellas on the beach.

Practical tips

  • Fill the tank and withdraw cash before leaving the Linha Verde: the village infrastructure is minimal.
  • Book the 4×4 and kayak outings with local guides, on arrival.
  • Bring extra sun protection: the only natural shade is under the coconut palms.
  • Respect the dunes and the restinga: they are what hold this paradise in place.

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: easy — beaches, lagoons and lookouts with 4×4 outings. Children: shallow, warm lagoons = paradise from ages 3-4. Seniors and reduced mobility: feasible — the 4x4s get close to almost everything; the mouth of the Inhambupe is pure contemplation.
