The Scarlet Ibis Fly-In: the Red Spectacle of the Delta do Parnaíba

Destination: Delta do Parnaíba

Every late afternoon the sky over the Delta do Parnaíba catches fire twice: first the sunset, then the guarás — thousands of birds of an impossible scarlet red crossing the horizon in flocks to roost in the mangroves. It is one of the great wildlife spectacles in Brazil, and this guide explains how to see it properly. The logistics of the delta are in the complete guide.

Why the guará is THAT red

Pure food chemistry: the scarlet ibis (Eudocimus ruber) is born greyish and reddens with every moult thanks to the carotenoids in the crabs and shrimp it forages in the mangrove — the same pigment that colors flamingos. An adult guará is, literally, years of crab turned into plumage. Healthy mangrove means red guará; that is why the fly-in is also an environmental thermometer for the delta.

How to see the fly-in

  • The right tour: afternoon departures from Porto dos Tatus (R$ 130-200) position the boat in front of the roosting islands between 4.30pm and 5.30pm — the flocks arrive in waves until dusk.
  • Best season: all year, with bigger flocks in the dry season (July to December) — dozens become hundreds, hundreds become thousands.
  • The golden protocol: engine off, voices down, distance from the mangrove. A boat that invades the roost scares the birds away — and an abandoned roost may never come back.
  • Photography: telephoto lens and a generous ISO (the light drops fast); in the final minutes, give up on the camera and just watch — advice from someone who once missed the best moment through a viewfinder.

A bonus for anyone who stays an extra day

The crab-catchers’ experience on the Ilha das Canárias closes the circle: you meet the uçá crab in the mangrove alongside the people who live from it — the same food chain that paints the guarás sustaining traditional communities for generations. Ecotourism coming full circle: the crab feeds the bird, the bird draws the tourist, the tourist supports the crab-catcher, the crab-catcher defends the mangrove. Everyone red with pride.

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: light — an anchored boat, a sky red with guarás; all you do is press the shutter. Children: magical at any age (the end of the day may call for a light jacket). Older travelers and people with reduced mobility: entirely workable — the spectacle happens all around the boat.
