Cânion Fortaleza: the Giant of the Serra Geral

Type: Canyon Destination: Cambará do Sul

If the Itaimbezinho is the most famous, the Fortaleza is the most imposing: 7.5 km long with walls of up to 900 meters in the Parque Nacional da Serra Geral, and rim viewpoints so open that on clear days you can see the Santa Catarina coast far below — and the sea of cloud filling the canyon at dawn is one of the most photographed spectacles in the South.

How to visit

Access is via Cambará do Sul (23 km of dirt road), under the same concession as the Itaimbezinho (Urbia) — entry ~R$ 107, with combo tickets for both parks, Tuesday to Sunday. The visit revolves around the rim: the trails to the Mirante do Fortaleza, the Pedra do Segredo (the impossible block balanced at the edge) and the Tigre Preto waterfall, which throws itself 400 meters down the wall in three drops.

The trails

  • Main viewpoint — a short walk from the parking lot to the rim: an immediate visual punch (light).
  • Pedra do Segredo + Tigre Preto circuit — around 3 km along the rim, viewpoints one after another (light to moderate).
  • The full rim out to the “prow” — a long walk across the highland fields with the canyon on your right the whole way (moderate, constant wind).
  • Cânion Malacara (next door) — from the bottom at Praia Grande, a water adventure and sibling to the Rio do Boi, with pools and rock walls (intense, with a guide).

When to go

Fall and winter (April to August): clear air, a morning sea of cloud and real cold (frosts and the occasional snowfall — bring EVERY warm layer). The afternoon mist is the villain all year round: mornings are the law. Compare it with its neighbor in the article Itaimbezinho or Fortaleza? — spoiler: the right answer is “both”.

🥾 Who is it for?

Effort: light at the nearby viewpoints; moderate along the full rim; intense in the Malacara. Children: viewpoints with STRICT supervision (some stretches of rim have no guard rail); rim trails 8+. Older travelers and people with reduced mobility: the main viewpoint is a short walk from the car over rough ground — workable slowly; strong wind calls for extra care with balance. The view, though, makes no distinction by age: it floors anyone.
